Microsoft tool to transfer programs from a Windows XP machine to a Windows Vista machine - Windows Easy Transfer Companion (WETC)
This tools works alongside the Easy Transfer Wizard using an Easy Transfer Cable, however it has a list of known programs that it will transfer should you so desire.

The Windows Easy Transfer Companion (WETC) is a program that you can use to help transfer programs from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) to a computer that is running Windows Vista. WETC does not replace Windows Easy Transfer. Instead, WETC is an independent program that complements Windows Easy Transfer. You can use WETC to transfer many kinds of programs between two computers that are connected by an Easy Transfer Cable or by a network connection.

David,

I am exploring replacing my current computer, but that will entail a change to Vista from XP.  Your site came up via Google with the link to the MS KB article on transferring programs, which is very important as I don't want to re-install every last program.

Thank you for the help with the link!

Hi. I've downloaded the Easy Transfer Companion and got the message: Windows Easy Transfer Companion (Beta) does not support this operating system language. I've changed it for the Vista machine and thought i had for the XP machine. I rebooted it, but still get the message. Any suggestions. I have XP SP2.

um, i had the same experience.  however i then noticed that the 'companion' required BOTH computers to be running 'US ENGLISH' .... very useful !!!!!

This is not a problem. Simply change the language in the computer settings for both computers and the transfer program works fine. Then change the language back afterwards. I have done it and there is no problem

I am looking for a free solution for a  program and settings transfer.  So far I have  found that  PickMeApp and WETC are the only free solutions for programs transfer.

Any other  solutions ?
