James and Matt will be hosting, so it is bound to be huge fun

Vista After Hours

You may be familiar with Windows Vista at work – whether you have deployed it or are evaluating it – but have you ever thought about the possibilities of Vista outside work? This session, aimed at IT professionals, explores not only the built in elements of Vista (such as Search, Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, and the Networking and Sharing Centre) but also how you can extend your Windows Vista Experience with Windows Media Centre, Xbox 360 and specific applications to open up a new world of gaming and home entertainment.
20 September 2007, Manchester: Vista After Hours
25 September 2007, Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Vista After Hours
27 September 2007, Falkirk: Vista After Hours
03 October 2007, London: Vista After Hours

Timings:
18:00-18:30pm- Registration and Tea/Coffee
18:30pm-19:45pm- Session 1
19:45pm-20:05- Food and refreshments
20:05-21:20- Session 2
21:20- Close
Speakers:
James Senior, Vista Technology Specialist, http://blogs.technet.com/james
Hello there! I’m James Senior and I work in Microsoft’s Technology Adoption Group whose sole purpose is to help our partners and customers understand and use our latest technology. As you would expect, Windows Vista features prominently in my work at the moment but my background in software development means I also spend some of my time involved in the world of Software as a Service (SaaS). Did I mention I also dabble in a bit of High Performance Computing?
In my spare time I enjoy playing Basketball and filling up my ½ terabyte Media Center with music and recorded TV.
Matt McSpirit, Vista Technology Specialist, http://blogs.technet.com/mattmcspirit
I joined Microsoft back in January 2006 as a Partner Technology Specialist, working primarily with our Virtualisation technologies. Since July of last year, my primary focus has been Windows Vista. Over recent months, I’ve worked with quite a number of our Partners, up and down the UK, enthusing and exciting them around the potential of Windows Vista and I’ve also had the chance to present to our Partners on Cinema screens across the country! Outside of the office, I’m keen on sports, being a big Man Utd fan, movies, and socialising with friends, and I also like to travel as much as possible! I also like the odd game on the Xbox 360!

ttfn

David

Technorati Tags: Windows Vista, After Hours

Security for Windows Vista (understanding more about UAC), Networks, plus advice and guidance

Security is always a big subject area. Over the last two months Technet have published the following items that will help understanding and delivery of secure systems base do Microsoft technology.

Windows Vista

TechNet Magazine: Inside Windows Vista User Account Control

Mark Russinovich explains that User Account Control (UAC) is one of the most misunderstood new features in Windows Vista. James Akrigg and Matt McSpirit provided the desktop entertainment while I covered off what servers we have out there and what is coming in the near future.

We promised the slides and here they are:

James has an amazing blog (Out of Office) at http://blogs.technet.com/outofoffice

Matt touches many aspects of desktop technology including that for small business at http://blogs.technet.com/mattmcspirit

Have a look at the blogs and enjoy the presentations.

but I felt that excited anyway) without a Volume License (or if you work at Microsoft) could get and use Windows Vista and the 2007 Office System (known as Office from here on in).

The British Library was chosen as two Leonardo De Vinci codices were being brought together for the 1st time in over 500 years. One was owned by the British Library and the other by Bill Gates, who appeared in person to launch the event. These books, plus other treasures from the British Library can be accessed and downloaded from http://www.bl.uk - I've put some info on how to demo it at British Library Demo of Vista and the Windows Presentation Foundation and the Windows Vista Magazine have put their copy in the same format http://wpf.windowsvistamagazine.co.uk/ttpdownload/browserapp.xbap.

As always I would like to thanks everyone involved - the partners and their customers who helped to shape and deliver Windows Vista and Office and the Windows and Office teams who put up with my rantings and demands and finally (still) invited me to the launch event to see it all so close up.

Anyway, the day in pictures (clicking on the thumbnails will bring up a larger version - some will go "massive" as they quailty is better on those)

The day started with a discussion between the customers, Doug Richard , the customers, the partners and Microsoft - think of this as a "what I'm going to ask you, so don't be scared... unless a great insight grabs me, and then I'll ask you something different" session

On the other side we have Adrian Barkey from EJC (posing as a thinking man) and then Susanne Dansey (Readycrest) and Scott Dodds (Head of SMS&P within Microsoft, so a very important man). The guys from Portfolio managed to keep out the lime light in these snaps, but their story how they were able to go Green with Office and Vista can be found at http://www.bcentral.co.uk/products/windows-vista-and-microsoft-office-2007-help-portfolio-communications.mspx?xid=sbissues_020207

After the massive TVs carried the videos it started with Gordon Frazer introducing the day, followed by the CEO of British Library and Bill Gates having a chat:

Then we went into the demos for consumers by the Windows Client team, Cynthia, David and Simon (who reminds me of a what not was looking over the wall) and of course a solo piece from Dan of the Feeling, before the groups concert

Then on to the business launch with Doug Richard, quizzing each customer as to the reality of their solutions being "worth it". The session was introduced by Scott Dodds and David Frost of the BCC who shared some amazing stats (such as 40% of businesses don't have a firewall and 50% don't backup daily), but then each customer talked through their solutions, with each using a partner (EJC.IT and Readycrest) with the exception of Bradley Photography who were very IT literate.

31 January 2007, London: Windows Vista System Integrity Technologies

Historically, operating systems have lived in their own little bubbles of trust. Every part of an operating system assumed that every other part was exactly what it claimed to be and performed only what it claimed it could do. Recent attacks, though, have shown that such implicit trust is no longer suitable for computers that connect to hostile environments. In this session, Steve Lamb introduces the security features in Windows Vista and shows how they help to prevent these environments taking over your computer.

29 May 2007, Manchester: Windows Vista System Integrity Technologies

Windows Vista features new system integrity technologies including code integrity, secure start-up, service hardening, mandatory integrity control and Internet Explorer protected mode. In this session, Steve Lamb explains how these technologies work.

Vista Webcasts US and on-demand

I got a mail from Vijay and never quite made the "putting it on the blog", so before time runs out too much, two great colleagues of mine are presenting Office and Vista and obviously, having the group meeting. From the web site http://www.nxtgenug.net/ViewEvent.aspx?EventID=39 this is the information. Matt and James are truly well versed in both products and will be able to answer any and all questions.

The Association of Midlands IT Professionals (MITPRO) and NxtGenUG team up to bring you an evening of Vista! Matt McSpirit and James Senior, otherwise known as "The Vista Boyz" from the Vista Partner Technical Specialists will talk about the various new features of Vista and Office 2007 and how they affect the SMB. Vista as a development platform will be looked at in the second part of the session and how Vista is the platform on which to create better applications.
Members are invited to bring a guest to this event, although we ask that the guest uses the registration page to sign up to NxtGenUG and then registers for the event themselves

ttfn
David
