I've got no problem with having different versions with the classification and licensing of OEM, upgrade and FPP... the gripe is the large number of base models. However, when technology journalist think it is confusing then what chance does Joe Public have when buying their home or business system. Windows XP was confusing enough for end customers with Home, Pro and MCE versions. Most people would have preferred a simple Windows Vista for Home and Windows Vista for Business - both being the ultimate product. Maybe even have a version Windows Vista for Business Mobile that could have had Bit Locker on every business laptop.

You really need to start thinking more positively ;-) So that was the con's - what were the pro's?

1st off, the general public only get to choose between 4 versions (not including OEM, upgrade etc) - Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate. Only Volume License peeps get to worry about enterprise - and they have a nice partner to help them through the mix.

On the OEM, Upgrade, FPP etc - what would you want, less choice from Microsoft.... it would be nice to hear yours or anyone elses suggestion (bearing in mind compliance with the DOJ).

On Vista launch day, the BBC Breakfast programme dedicated a special feature to Vista, presented by Maggie Philbin. The only cons worthy of the segment was the confusing number of versions and she got it wrong when she stated there was only five versions when we all know different! The media and more importantly the general public find the five "models" confusing without taking into mind all the different options of OEM, upgrade, retail boxed, volume license, etc, etc.
