Your registry fix for Word worked just fine.

Opening Execl in safe mode avoids the stdole.tlb error and the registration process however I'm concerned that running Excel in safe mode all the time may inhibit functionality. Do you have any suggestions for pinning down the problem? Thanks so much!

I have some old VB programs that, using automation, call Word macros. the 2003 macros won't work in Word 2007, so I had to reinstall.

Your fix works like a charm, even on Win 8.1 x64.

WOW... THIS REALLY WORKED.... THANK YOU!!!!!

The fix to the problem is very simple as it turns out - simply run the following commands (by pressing the Windows Key+R or typing it into the Start/Run command box. Use the line with Office\11.0 if you have Office 2003 installed and Office\12.0 if you have Office 2007 installed. You can use both if you have both installed :

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

That is it. Office 2007 might want to have one more spin round the block with it's configuration dialog box, but that should be it.

I installed Office 2007 on a remote location. I ran the reg keys. When I run Word or Excel from the exe it runs correct without the installer. When I double click on a file (.doc,docx,xls or xlsx) The config window apears.

It is as if the associated program is not linked to the correct exe. I renamed the Setup.exe, but after I double clicked on a doc, it recreates the setup.exe file.

After that I remember about the system restore... I turned off system restore but it still creates a new setup.exe.

I saw there were a few people here experiencing the same problem. Did anyone figured it out yet?

Andrew,

Unfortunately, for Access, switching between the different versions DOES need to go through the configuration steps, so there is no way to avoid it and have Access function correctly.

I've tried all the methods described here to get rid of my Access 2010 install runs each time, but I've failed.

Maybe some extra suggestions?

was the answer -- worked perfectly for my 2007 version that was installed on laptop that had had 2003 on it before (I uninstalled 2003). Makes me a happy camper to not have to go through the config process every time I open a Word doc. :)

Thank you so much for this piece of advice. I hate using Word 2007 for mail merge, the way it doesn't suppress blank lines drives me mad! Now I can keep Word 2003 installed and it doesn't try and configure itself every time. Big thanks!

I am running Office 2010 and no matter what /program I am in, the find and replace box pops up and it won't quit. Is there a known issue with this or a fix?

Awww do you have a link to also fix Windows Office's Excel program? Not only do I get a dialogue box, I get an error message box saying "stdole.32.tlb, and when I exit the box, up comes the configure dialogue box. I hope you can help!!! Thanks so much, Jen

Thanks so much David, it worked for me. I ran the first link, it worked 1x, then the dialogue box came back the next time I started Word. So I copied and pasted the 2nd link, and restarted the computer. Smooth sailing now. (I had a trial version of Office 365, then found my CD with Office 2007, and installed it. I uninstalled the 365 later, and then got the problem. Thanks for your help :-) Jen

Wow. This 'configuration process' running every time I opened Word 2k7 on Win 8.1 issue was driving me nutz. Went to a half-dozen sites, including M$ and nothing worked. Found this, and -bam!- problem solved! Unbelievably COOL. Bookmarked.

Thanks! I had Office 2007 and Office 97 on the same computer and this would run whenever I opened Office 2007. (Which ended up being a lot, as I would double-click on documents to open them only to see the configuration dialog.)

I had the problem with Microsoft Office 2007 Entreprise and Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus. Each time I started Word 2007 (and only this software) I had the problem.

I typed the second line :

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

And the problem was solved.
