Right,

The register reported 58 job cuts in the UK, so that is 2% of the predicted amount. Now that is what I call inflated reporting!

Andrew, if you read the article I linked in my above comments you will see my views:

1) The report said 3000 jobs going in the UK when there are less than that in total employees

2) We announced 1400 jobs going today world wide, with the option for up to 5000 posts going, however we will continue recruiting, which means that the net impact is expected to be only 2000 or so jobs lost world wide over 18 months. This is very, very different to the 30000 jobs and 3000 in the UK reported

3) I expect the number in the UK to be much, much less that the 1400 as the roles being eliminated are not very common in the UK

4) I did say I did expect some jobs to go in the UK, and I still do. I'm hoping I'm not one, but you never know, however I would be amazed if it even reached 10% of the articles number. Imagine the press got the amount of money you losyt wrong by a factor of 10 or 20, would you think that was shoddy? I would and I think it is the same with the job figure.

I heard on the news today Microsoft will be axing 5,000 jobs!

Whats your tthoughts on this given your previous statements on the subject?

Svbdm - yes, still rubbish.

If you read the announcement at www.microsoft.com/.../01-22fy09Q2earnings.mspx you will see that is 1400 jobs versus the reported 30,000 (a 20 fold difference). Also, over the next 18 months, around 2000 jobs will go as we continue to recruit, many of those people will be existing employees, but where the job spec is changed so much that a re-interview process has to happen. These are both World Wide figures, taking from HR, IT, R&D etc. The UK is a Sales & Marketing office.

Also, the report said 3000 jobs in the UK. As I said before, the UK had less than 3000 jobs in total, so that would be the entire workforce, plus another 1000 (ish - I don't know the exact numbers). Not knowing that your "estimate" is the entire countries workforce is poor journalism. It was the ludicrous number of 3000 I thought was rubbish. To think that while every other business is cutting heads that Microsoft would not would also be rubbish. Microsoft is a business and as economies stop growing, the heads requried to bring in business will shrink or your cost / sale goes up. I didn't think our shareholders would accept that.

As I said above, I did expect some people to go, but not 3000 from the UK. I don't expect it to be 300 or even close to that, but I'm speculating. As I said, maybe someone put a couple of extra zeros into that 3000 jobs being lost in the UK.

I also think that growing in this market is an amazing achievement for Microsoft and shows the strength of the business, but I don't think we can avoid the recession here either.

Everyone is expecting recession getting over soon. I have a very close friend, who graduated from Harvard. Worked for ML for over 8 years, recently he’s been “right sized” too, despite of his outstanding performance and the increasing revenue he generated. OMG, now the banking industry is badly hurt, how long it would take for those financial background guys like him get back to the job market. Banking jobs are not there as much as before as easily seen on **** and other job sites in the region

Layoffs are defo big news at the moment.

Personally I'm surprised Microsoft haven't made cuts before. You might think it's rubbish but I think it's gonna be a reality very soon.
