Hi

I want to add a new website to our SBS2003 box to run alongside companyweb etc.  I have added the website in IIS, in DNS I have added an alias CNAME, but this points directly at the server, so I get the normal server.local website.  How do I point the alias so it loads the new website instead?

Thanks

In IIS, have you added a host header for your new site that has the specific url in it?

thanks

Hi

unfortunatley I found an internet site which told me what to do, so I followed this, but I cant remember which one.....sorry.  Basically in the website list with companyweb etc in it I added another site using the wizard.

You may have guessed I am slightly out of my depth here.

Thanks

Richard

If anyone else struggles to do this, you do the following

1. Start the Internet Service Manager
2. Right-click the Web site to be configured, and then click Properties.
3. On the Web Site tab, select the IP address that the site will use.

Note: if you only have one IP address on the server, select All Unassigned, and set the TCP Port that should be used (usually 80).
4. Click Advanced.
5. In the Multiple identities for this Web Site list, select the identity that you want to use.
6. Click Edit, and then add the desired host header name.

Half the time, it isn't complicated, its just knowing what it is called!!

Hi

Now I have it working, how can I remote access the site.........I have tried the ip followed by the internal name, I get an authorisation error if I use something like the following https://80.170.54.36/newsite/index.htm for example (thats not my IP by the way just in case!)

Thanks

OK, so the requirements:

  1. You create a new site in IIS
  2. In IIS you give the site 1 or more "host headers" - names it can be accessed by, eg http://newsite and http://www.newsite.com - note, you do not put in the http:// in the host header field
  3. You create a CNAME entry in your local dns for the http://newsite site that points to your sevrers IP address
  4. You buy the domain name for newsite.com and have the IP address point to the IP address for your sevrer.
  5. It should all work

Note, you can NOT get to your new site with the IP address, you have to use the name.

Thanks

David
