I use a script with robocopy to backup my laptop to SBS 2003 and then shutdown. This morning I found it paused due to the drive on the server being full. So within W7 I UNC'ed to the laptop folder to delete my new W7 backup.

Now bare in mind that the hard drive I back up to is only 500Gb. I was curious to see that W7 claimed there was 8.64Tb and over 4 million files to delete (that before I stopped it and manually deleted it via the server). Its as if it see's junctions and re-adds them into the list of files to delete. A bit like robocopy without the /XJ switch in reverse.

Just t add, there's no beta version ever installed on the laptop - only with VPC.

I hope you can offer me some advise on how to use a dual booted laptop. I've purchased an Acer Aspire 6930 which has Vista (think it's the home edition) but as this is a business machine and I am currently running XP Pro on my other laptop I decided to have XP installed and now have it dual booting. Now I've come to the point of installing programs back on it I'm not sure how it works using the two together. I understand that I have the choice of which OS system to use when it boots up but if I've installed the accounts package and Office 2003 in XP and have them open can I then open something I've installed in Vista such as our online scheduling system? I don't want to find that I'm having to log off and change systems all the time - if this is the case I will just install everything in XP. I would really have preferred an XP system but couldn't find one. I'm completely new to Vista and am unsure whether some of the applications I use will work.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Willow

(See Vista Hibernation - how to re-enable? for more info.)

Windows Firewall and Security Center - Can get disabled by using the "Services" control panel.
to re-enable: run the Services control panel, and select the service called "Windows Firewall" and or "Security Center", right click and press properties. Change the startup type from "Disabled" to whatever you want depending on when you want it to run. Manual if you want to start it on your own, Automatic if you want it to start right away when you start windows, or Automatic (Delayed Start) if you want it to run a couple minutes after you start windows. And of course I recommend Automatic.

Task Manager - Can get disabled by changing registers.
to re-enable: run c:\windows\regedit.exe and change the tag HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System \ DisableTaskMgr to the value of 0 or delete it altogether.(See How to enable / disable / change the Task Manager on Windows Vista for more info.)

Note that a virus can disable or enable anything that the user can disable and enable.

Answer To: I'm an admin, how come some programs say otherwise?

This question has appeared a little bit in this category and has never really been answered as a whole, just bits and peices of the answer have been said on these fourms, so I'll just run through what I've experienced:

1. I'm an admin, how come it says I don't have access to something, or a program says that you must be in an admin account when I try to run it?
Answer, because just being marked admin doesn't mean that your programs run with that kindof access like in XP.

2. So what benefits are there to being an admin?
Admins have the option of running programs and windows operations with full control (keep that in mind it is just an option), they still have to tell the computer when they want to exercise this ability of theirs. For safety reasons of course. For example: an admin right clicks on a program and clicks run as admininistrator, the computer will confirm that you want this to run as an admin (another security feature) and then it will run, but in a limited account the when you click run as..., it will popup a password prompt for one of the admins accounts, thats why being an admin is so special.

3. How do I know when a program is going to run as an admin?
First of all, whenever Vista comes accross a program that has to run as an admin (or you marked to run that way) then a shield icon appears near the link to open the file, or if your viewing the program itself right embedded into the icon of the program. But this is not purely accurate in telling whether a progam is going to run as... Why? Because when a program owner creates their program they get to make their icon and can embedded this shield right into their icon. So the shield doesn't always mean that.
So how can you tell? Another way to tell is when the program runs as an admin, the screen darkens (safety feature) and displays a message box that displays the program's name and credentials, you can then either click continue or close.
Why is that in there? Again its a safety feature. If you can't run as an admin all the time, neither can viruses, that way when a virus trys to run as an admin the confirmation window appears and your like, "What? I didn't try running anything and cirtainly not as an admin," so you click close.

4. How do you mark a program as always run as admin?
The following works on programs and shortcuts to programs:
Right click on the file, click properties, click the tab called Compatibility, then select 'Run this program as an administrator'. If you want this to be applied to all users then click the button 'Show settings for all users' and select it there instead. That makes the program always run as an admin. (Note that setup programs automatically have this property even if the ckeckbox is not checked), after saving the setting and refreshing the window, you see that the program's icon is added with a shield. However in a limited account, if you click always run as admin, every time, at the startup or the program, the account asks for permisson from an admin.

Well thats all I can think of at the moment, if there is anymore related questions or if I got a little info wrong just post here.

Vista and Microsoft Office

I own a copy of Microsoft Office Suite 97 and don't want to switch to a newer one. Is there a way to install that Office and when opening it open in XP or Windows 98 mode? I've been using the new Office that comes with Vista (trial subscription) and don't like it. I really like "familiar" things. LOL Will check back to see if you have a suggestion. Thanks.

Vista Hibernation - how to re-enable?

Hi,

On Vista 5728, I used the disk clean up wizard to clear out some space on my 30gig partition (somehow Vista reported only 3gig left (after only 2 weeks of use), and would not burn a data DVD because it had run out of space :-(

I ticked the box to remove the hibernation sys file, thinking I could simply re-enable hibernation once I had burned the DVD, deleted the temporary files and now have 6gig of space again, but after a reboot, I am unable to find an option to re-instate hibernation.

I have looked in power options and even followed the excellent help, but there is no where to Endable/Disable Hibernation. There is of course the "Turn Hibernation on or off" but when I select this, I get "Change settings for the plan:Power Saver" and this only offers me sleep settings and there is no hibernation settings.

Please could anyone help?

Thanks

Andrew

Ps I would happily use "sleep", but my new Dell Inspiron wakes up after sleeping, but the screen is completely blank and I need to cold reset to restart the machine. Alas that is another problem, which may need Dell to sort once they support Vista.

Restoring NTBackups created in XP to Vista

Hi

Far too many icons, messages all the time asking if <whatever> is what I want to do, and the best part, I have not been able to get my pop mail from outlook 2003 because the firewall client 2000 isn't compatible, but the damn thing refuses to uninstall it so I can't use the 2004 version.

Document and settings now appear to be 'users', so straight away im not selling an upgrade to my clients because the logon scripts will no longer work, roaming profiles take 4 times longer to update, and whats with the transparent icons? buggered if I can see the recycle bin. Only know its there because of the words below it. For reasons I have yet to work out, my domain account 'terry' now appears as a shortcut on the desktop rather than 'my documents'. Great - but it also shows system files which were previously tucked away. So now instead of going to my documents, I get 38 system files plus 'my documents'.

I hope that OEM vista comes with downgrade rights because I can't see myself rolling this out for a very long time - if at all.
