Problems installing SQL 2005 on SBS 2003 - cant install instance

We have been trying to install an instance of SQL 2005 workgroup (from Premium CD 2 media) on a SBS 2003 SP2 server that had SharePoint MSDE & SBS MSDE Monitoring installed. When installing SQL 2005, there were no prompts as to instance name, collation, or other SQL defaults. After installation of SQL 2005 & SP2 & SP3, SQL Management Studio About Help showed V9 was installed, but the SharePoint instance indicated V80.

We followed various instructions (http://www.smallbizserver.net/Articles/tabid/266/Id/211/PageID/285/SBS-2003-R2--Upgrading-the-Sharepoint-MSDE-instance-to-SQL-2005.aspx and http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/0/8/40860507-c351-4308-a876-e1b83ee4e77a/sqlinstallsteps.htm) in an attempt to upgrade SharePoint to Workgroup Edition however they failed. On initial upgrade attempts, we kept getting the message to reinstall from the source DVDs with SKUUPGRADE=1 and after we did so, we kept only being offered to install the client components and documentation that was already installed. We were unable to upgrade the MSDE instance of SharePoint to Workgroup V9.

We then removed all SQL 2005 via Add/Remove programmes and also ran C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\arpwrapper /REMOVE.

No errors on program removal were displayed.

We tried reinstalling SQL 2005 but were only offered the client components and documentation, even though there was no SharePoint or MSDE or 2005 instance.

We then totally removed other SharePoint components, SBS Monitoring MSDE, SharePoint references in IIS by reference to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 & Microsoft KB article 829114. to ensure all versions of MS-SQL was removed. Neither SharePoint nor Monitoring are required.

There are no MSSQL services visible or running.

But still after uninstalling after removing all visible references MSSQL, we still cannot install a new instance. On every attempt to reinstall SQL, we are never offered to install an instance and after the standard configuration checks that are all reported as being successful, the installation still only offers to install client components and documentation.

No error codes on program removal or installation were displayed.

Can someone please let me know why we cannot properly install SQL 2005 with an instance and let me know how to overcome this problem?

SBS Upgrade - Standard to Premium

Hi,

I have a client who is also a MS Certified Partner. They have Small Business Server Standard installed. They have the media and key for Small Business Server Premium and want us to upgrade their software.

Is this just a case of changing the sbs key and installing the premium technologies cd? They are on SBS standard R2.

Brother MFC 8880DN on SBS 2003

Are MFC products in general supported on SBS?

This is the second device, the first being a HP, which when the software install is attempted it reports something along the lines "not for your operating system". The CD is stamped as Windows 2003 (no reference to SBS), I have checked the website for both vendors, again no specific reference to SBS (2003 OK), the retailers say "it works on 2003 so it SHOULD work on 2003 SBS" ... same unconvincing message when you eventually get to speak to someone in the vendor help desk ... "it should work".

Problem for this customer (who is buying elsewhere and using us to troubleshoot the install) is that the town they purchase from is 1600km away and there is not a lot in between ... Western Australia is a big, spartan place! ... so getting the vendors/retailers to actually sit up and take notice is not happening in todays new definition of customer service ...

I thought maybe it was the local computer, so I ran up a couple of test VM on our servers, one was 2003 (Full), the other 2003 SBS and ran the install files on each. Worked OK on full but not SBS ... I passed this information onto the vendors but so far "bin 13" ... no response.

Am I chasing a lame duck?

SBS2003 to 2008 migration ISA challenge

I was hoping to get some insight from this group on a recurring challenge I have with all my customers that are currently on SBS 2003 Premium with ISA installed. Whenever I try to follow the ‘reconfiguring steps’ for network settings, it seems there is always connectivity issues once the Gateway is moved off of SBS 2003 (there always seems to be an ISA rule or policy that won’t migrate to the new gateway router).

I was hoping to get some guidance on best practices for moving off of ISA 2004 (either to ISA 2006 standalone server or a UPNP router). Also, I cannot find any guidance on what SMB routers will work best in an SBS 2008 infrastructure.

Any advice or suggestions on the above would be greatly appreciated.

SBS Fax services crash

I look after a number of small businesses and keep getting the same issue with Fax services at each of the sites.

After a number of faxes are received and sent to the companyweb successfully, the companies will call and advise that they are not receiving any faxes. After checking the server, I try to restart the fax services using the fax manager. The Fax services will not stop and restart. The only way I've been able to clear the issue to restart the server. The phone/fax line rings but the modem does not pickup.

I've installed the latest updates to sbs (sp1) and checked the modems are on the HCL.

Any ideas, at the moment I've created a task to restart the fax services each day which helps but does not always resolve this issue.

domain registered computers keeps dropping on the restart

Hello David

I’ve got a issue on one of my networks. Please can you a assist me?

Symptoms: Computer can’t connect to the domain. (The computer was register to the domain , it just randomly dropped) Network drives are inaccessible and no connection to the internet.

If I remove the computer from the domain and reregister the computer to the domain it works for one day only. The next day the user switches his computer on it gives out the same error. “can not find domain XXX”

Now look at this, if I ask the user to leave his computer on, till the following day the user is able to access his network drive but NOT the INTERNET. Weird?

Also the users exchange account is not affected.

There are also no errors on my server regarding this issue

Adding a new website to an SBS2003 box

I want to add a new website to our SBS2003 box to run alongside companyweb etc. I have added the website in IIS, in DNS I have added an alias CNAME, but this points directly at the server, so I get the normal server.local website. How do I point the alias so it loads the new website instead?

I have seen a post in which David says he back up on to a couple of USB drives, will any USB drives work? the reason I ask is that I checked with Seagate support and they say their USB drives will not, and I cannot find anyone who actually says their drives will work with SBS or Server 2003.

SBS 2003 behind a locked down (inbound) firewall

Hi all,

I have a client who has moved into serviced offices. They have internet access as part of the rent but inbound access is highly restricted (all ports blocked). The landlord has offered dedicated access (and thus we can have ports opened) for £120 per month....

Question: Can anyone think of a way round this? They cannot have their own lines in, so they can't get their own connection that way. 3G would work but would be limited by download restrictions (eg 3Gb per month).... Is there similar solution to DDNS?

nb, client wants the use of OWA, VPN, outlook on the move etc, hence the need for the various ports....

POP3 Connection Manager - How to Delete and Re create

Hi,

It seems the POP3 Connection Manager on an SBS 2003 server has become currupt or at least is misbehaving and and not picking up emails from the various POP3 accounts.

I would like to delete it and recreate it. I have already deleted and re created the individual POP accounts but would like to re create the whole connection manager. I am sure I did this years ago but sorry do not remember how and obviouly did not document it!

Hi All, Im posting here cos Windows Mobile forum is a bit small and might get missed but also is applicable here with SBS / Exchange.

Had an increase of clients wanting mobile pda with WM6.

At least 50% of them have moaned about not being able to stop read receipts. Been to windows mobile forum and many asking the same question but the forum doesn't seem to have much contribution from Microsoft answering questions... :-)

So thought I would come here and ask the expert... Mr UKSBSGUY... :-)

Group Policy for IE

I have a number of users who are now installing firefox and safari as they think they are better, this is ok, but when it goes wrong then I have to sort it out. I want to force the browser to be IE to stop all this.

Question on 64-Bit

Forgive me if thsi is a repetitive or non-intelligent question.

I am a consultant that works mainly with smaller companies (10 or 15 users). I am new to the 64-Bit world. With SBS2008 being 64-Bit only, I am concerned that my customers are going to be left out in the cold. Many of them run 32-Bit applications on their servers along side of the OS. POP3 retrivers, Peachtree, Quickbooks (via terminal services for remote), etc., and other....I think I made the point.....

My understanding, and, someone please correct me if I am wrong (and I hope I am), is that you CANNOT run 32-Bit applications along side 64. So essentially NO 32-Bit applications will run on aSBS2008 server?

Is this correct?

If so, I feel sorry for small businesses that now have to upgrade, IF an upgrade is even available, to new software. I am kind of suprised that MS would take this turn. At the same time i do acknowledge the power that 64-Bit will bring. I just need tobe sure I am correct about aht I am saying when I break this news to all my clients.

URGENT help needed with slow access to Excel files over SBS network

Hi Everyone

I'm having real difficulty with the speed of opening two Excel files on my network.

We have an SBS 2003 network as such:

WAN > Netgear DG834 router > SBS 2003 Server > XP Pro clients

The router, SBS 2003 server and XP client are all plugged into a central switch.

Thye SBS provides DNS, Exchange, VPN etc. The router provides DHCP. I know this is not ideal. I can change DHCP to server but this will disrupt business ALOT.

We have two Excel files shared via mapped drive to all the client. They are 14BM and 8MB in size respectively.

The thing is it takes ages to open them. Even files half their size. I've restarted the server to see of it makes a difference but none whatsoever.

It take about 1 minute for the 14MB file and 45 seconds for the 8MB file to open via tyhe mapped drive. Even when saved locally on thye machine it takes that long.

Both files does contain loads of PivotTables for reporting from one worksheet to the other etc.

Any ideas? Or anyone working with SBS 2003 that experienced this before? This is really doing my head in. Other much smaller Excel (and all OFFICE files) works fine. We use Office XP.

Hardware Compatibility & Drivers & use of box

Pardon me to post here, but I have had a challenge with finding correct info on MS site as the hardware compatibility link is not serving up the info.

I decided to follow my son's lead after he built his own gaming box and build my own server for SBS 03. I needed SBS to run Goldmine premium (8.0) CRM for my business using SQL 05 Workgroup edition. At this point, I will be only person
accessing that software.

I have been peer to peer network, but in essence, have been server based using 1 primary system for all file storage to ease backup pains with everyone doing their own thing. All images (photographer) & documents have been like this since my install of Lantastic DOS many, many, moons ago.

2 part question.

1. How crazy is it to run the server box as my personal machine as well? I have always run the "fake" server as my machine with no perceptible slowdown. Only 3- 4 other machines accessing data and not for extended periods

Specs: Gigabyte Mobo P35C-DS3R 45nm either DDR2 or DDR3 1066FSB up to 8G DDR2 (anticipating 64 bit). Mobo is 64 bit compliant.
One of the supported processors for the Mobo was the Intel 3110 Core 2 Xeon running at 3.0Ghz. As this is a low end server chip, I thought it should serve my purpose.
HD's 1TB seagate partitioned with 100G for Server and future updates/upgrades with 2 640G Maxtor HD's using the onboard Raid controller in Raid 1. Using a 550w Corsair PS.

What problems would I run into using the box in a dual manner- client/server role? And, is it even technically possible with SBS to do this?

2. Bought EVGA 8000 series graphics card to run my dual dvi monitors and believe NVIDIA doesn't support SBS 03 with drivers for it. But, I believe ATI cards are supported for SBS 03 and drivers are more readily available. I tried XP drivers based upon EVGA blog, but the card is not even seen in the box. Could be a Mobo issue as well though.

For question 1, Yea or nay on using as client/server?

Question 2- Since MS site not serving up compatibility for hardware, any suggestions on how to check? Would XP drivers be possible to be used if SBS 03 not available?

Virtual Server

Virtual servers seems to be the in thing at the moment and it has me wondering about future installations and cloning.

If I were to have a quad core / 4gb system and SBS 2003 R2 Std could I install a basic server on the machine, then run SBS as a virtual server? in my mind there's two issues, performance and licensing.

But the real advantage I could see is that you could shut down SBS and drop into the base / host server, copy the SBS installation, and then restart SBS up again without having to reboot the main server. Im a big fan of cloning but hate having to boot into DOS and it will only be time before the old tried and tested clone ways will no longer work.

Im keen to have a go on my test server, but would the license allow this? In my mind, std server is SBS before SBS is installed, and as its on the same physical machine would this require additional cals?

WSUS on SBS2003 R2

I have installed WSUS, but it does not appear in the management console like it normally does, also, it keeps on coming up with warnings about having no client computers setup. When I have installed this before it added itself to the management console, plus I didn't setup any client machines.

Ant ideas what have I done wrong?

I have an specific requirement to have the sbs sharepoint to be available publicically via https://FQDN, in the same way as the following:

https://FQDN/exchange = OWA

https://FQDN/remote = Remote Web Access

I need sharepoint to be available at:

https://FQDN = Sharepoint

Can this be achieved by repointing the home directory of "Default Web Site"

FROM:

c:\inetpub\wwwroot

TO:

c:\inetpub\companyweb

and replicating all other setting under that properties page ?

Can I also drag the following into the "Default Web Site" from "Companyweb"

_layouts

_vti_bin

_wpresources

_aspnet_clients (allready exists in "Default Web Site"

_vti_pvt

Hope this makes sense.

I have two NICs installed as follows:

ISP Network connection: 192.168.1.3

Server Local network connection: 192.168.100.1

Ther are no other servers on the network ad the router has its DHCP disabled. It seems that it is seeing the other NIC as another server even though there is no connection between the two networks, other than the fact that the two NICs reside in the same machine.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to block an email address from being able to send to one of my users. The user in dispute is sending 'personal' emails to this particular address.

I would like to block emails coming from that address. How can I do this?

I've tried setting up Sender Filtering but it is not working for some reason. Anyone have any ideas??

TLS/FIPS for Terminal Services and RWW in SBS 2003

Hi David,

I had a question about connect to Server desktop through the RWW

Two methods to connect in SBS using Terminal Services for Remote Administration
1 - Terminal Services RDP 3389
2 - connect to Server desktop (which uses tsweb through the Remote Web Workplace)

In experimenting with SBS Remote Administration I discovered an unusual circumstance in which you CANNOT set the Terminal Services Connection to TLS/FIPS compliant encryption and still access the SBS computer through RWW.

So to explain:
*I used Terminal Services Configuration
*loaded a certificate
*in the Terminal Services Connection Properties, General TAB:
**Set Security Layer to SSL
**Set Encryption Level to FIPS compliant

NOW... connecting to the SBS server using RWW connect to Server Desktop does not work

SOLUTION... in the above walkthrough, change Security Layer to NEGOTIATE. This allowed the RWW session to negotiate it's own encryption level without affecting connections using Terminal Services Client RDP/RDC on 3389 directly. Remote Desktop Connections can still be made over 3389 and they are secure (you see the little lock symbol). With RDP/RDC, the certificate can be viewed and believe RDC 6.0 negotiates highest possible encryption.

My question is this:

When connecting to Server desktop using RWW, the wrapper indicates there is no encryption what-so-ever. (i.e. No LOCK symbol, no certificate can be viewed, etc...) DOES TSWEB THROUGH THE RWW WEBSITE USE A CERTIFICATE AND NOT INDICATE THAT -OR- DOES IT LAUNCH A CONNECTION ON PORT 3389 FROM THE RWW INTERFACE USING TSWEB, AND!!! IS THIS CONNECTION UN-ENCRYPTED?

moving SBS 2003 to a new quicker server

Hi All,

I would like some help/options on doing some work with SBS 2003.

Objective:
I need to move our current SBS 2003 Std server (running on a PC spec machine) to a new server (Quad core etc) with SBS 2003 Premium.

Steps:
My first step will be to build/install SBS Premium and from experience and the SAMS Unleashed book I should be able to do this fine.
The reason for going to SBS Premium is to use ISA server functionality for blocking/limiting user internet access - which I am comfortable with configuring

Specifically I'd like to know is there a way for me to backup all the current SBS settings (accounts, mailboxes, data) and restore them onto the new server, without me having to recreate them

OR IF I have to build the new server from scratch (create accounts, mailboxes etc) then does that mean I have to remove the current PC's from the domain and then join them to the new one. I.E. can the clients tell if the server has changed even if I stick to the same server name? What happens to the users mailboxes and data?

Please let me know if you have a better way of completing the objective, have you experience in doing this
