Vista Defender - "Software Explorer"

Hi,

Is anyone getting frustrated with the above part of the new Vista Windows Defender program? I am. It is telling me that several of my applications have "not yet been classified" and giving me a pop up every few hours.

How do we overide the settings? - ie allow applications to proceed normally, or does this depend on MS approving them?

Vista Hibernation - how to re-enable?

Hi,

On Vista 5728, I used the disk clean up wizard to clear out some space on my 30gig partition (somehow Vista reported only 3gig left (after only 2 weeks of use), and would not burn a data DVD because it had run out of space :-(

I ticked the box to remove the hibernation sys file, thinking I could simply re-enable hibernation once I had burned the DVD, deleted the temporary files and now have 6gig of space again, but after a reboot, I am unable to find an option to re-instate hibernation.

I have looked in power options and even followed the excellent help,but there is no where to Endable/Disable Hibernation. There is of course the "Turn Hibernation on or off" but when I select this, I get "Change settings for the plan:Power Saver" and this only offers me sleep settings and there is no hibernation settings.

Please could anyone help?

Ps I would happily use "sleep", but my new Dell Inspiron wakes up after sleeping, but the screen is completely blank and I need to cold reset to restart the machine. Alas that is another problem, which may need Dell to sort once they support Vista.

I got this sorted - it seems that the whole system is read only except the my docuements areas.

I was able to adjust the ACL security settings so that when I cleared the read only attribute, it actually stayed in place rather than kept being inherited from the root settings.

Such fun, this Vista, but still pretty!

Hi Terry,

Activation is an annoying necessity I fear - and one which MS would be very dis-inclined to "open a back door" for anyone!. Whilst we all assume that members of Partner / OEM / Members groups are devoid of dishonesty, I am quite sure that in reality, there will inevitably be those which dabble in the "dark side" which are lurking in several of those partner groups and companies.

We only have to look at the number of paper MCSE's etc whom obtain their certs from Asia without even sitting an exam, if these number just 0.1% then there are going to be thousands of "dodgey" IT Pro's out there! The asia test centres have "befriended" MS to obtain the permission to test customers and then promptly stolen all the answers and set up again as another test centre but this time as a testing bucket shop. Ouch! Once people have access to a online system where they can generate/validate activations I am sure that the protection would be cracked/published/sold within weeks if not days!

I feel your pain, since you are a system builder, but think about the MS Certified Trainers out there - if they are giving a Server or SBS class then they need to activate up to 8 different OS/application licences per student PC - now that can be frustating!, (especially since we often leave it to the day before and then we have to spend an hour or so on the automated system!, quite numb especially if the speaker phone is kaput!!)

Also, I am not sure if you use OEM licences, but these should not be re-activated when you replace a PC/Server with a different M/board since they are only licensed for that original equipment. I make it quite clear to customers that if the box gets fried then they should be looking at a new machine with a new OEM licence etc, a fried box to me is like a British car made on a Friday shift... Better to claim on the business warranty/insurance and replace it with a new shiny one.

Perhaps as an alternative to your idea, MS could open a second line of call centres which are manned by native English speaking helpline - we would probably even be happy to pay a premium rate for that quality?

Regards the 3 chances - I think this applies to re-activations where the equipment is not significantly changed, ie standard re-installations etc.

Vista & RPC over HTTP on the Small Business Server 2003?

Hi,

Has anyone got RPC over HTTP with Vista RC1 & Outlook 2007 on a Small Business Server 2003?

I have my XP SP2 box quite happily connecting via RPC over HTTP on the Small Business Server 2003, but not the Vista client.

Anyone got any tips / points of reference to get this working? (Understandably the SBS newsgroups can't advise me on this yet, so I thought I would come to the Oracle....)

Office 2007 - read-only (Compatability)

Hi,

Whenever I open a spreadsheet (Excel) it opens as read only.

I have ensured that the files are not read only (applied the setting to apply to the folder and files etc). When I open in Excel they become read only! I then go back to check the folder again, and all the files are read only..

The folders are not in the root of a system drive, but on a second partition.

I simply want to make amends, and save back as 97-2003 version.

Is this Vista or Office or both that are designed this way? - I am not a Beta player,but I am sure that this behaviour will really annoy everyone if it stays in the RTM....

SBS 2003 & SharePoint Portal Server 2003

Is there any plans to develop a SBS intergrated version of SPS? (Just like we have for CRM?)

I have a client, with several branch offices, whom are using WSS. They want some of the functionality of SPS, but is reluctant to spend lots of money on separate new server box, and the licensing costs are also putting him off.

Any thoughts? - ie if there is development for MS to produce a SPS/SBS product, then I think he would be happy to wait a while.

Re: Vista Beta for SBSC?

Replying to myself now :-) , for I now have a beta copy of Vista, and it is currently churning away installing on a spare box.

Picked it up at a Gold Partner MS sponsored event yesterday. The event was ok, but I learnt more in David's recent Vista presentation in 30 minutes, than I did yesterday in half a day!

At least, now I can include a few screen shots in my next newsletter, cool
