Spent a little more time on this and now see that the server was originally configured with the drives on the highest IDs on the scsi backup plane. Any additional drives pickup lower IDs and the card attempts to boot from these.

I'm going to have to break the mirror, move the drives down the backplane and recreate the mirror.

A little worried about deleting the array as the adaptec storage manager tells me that deleting the array will delete all data. I'm sure it won't but any advise would be helpful.

Upgrade Adaptec SCSI Card

Hi,

We have a customer who has a hotswappable back plane supported by an Adaptec
2010s Raid Controller.

They wish to add additional disks but it doesn't seem to be possible with
that controller. It is a Zero Channel card so when I plug in an extra disk
the existing mirror is immediately unbootable.

We have sourced a 2310 which will do the job but of course Windows 2003
won't boot from it.

I have imported the array from the 2010 and it starts to boot from the 2310
but fails and reboots. I assume this is because there isn't a driver
installed on Windows 2003 that will support it.

Has anyone ever tried to upgrade adaptec raid controllers before? If so,
how did you achieve it. Or is a rebuild or a restore from backup the only way.

Still waiting for memory but I've been chatting to a tech support agent at the manufacturer. He claims to have seen similar issues after 'bum' installations of SP1 for SBS. He advises uninstalling SP1 and reinstalling.

I am going to try this on a test server first but would like to hear of any pitfalls, advice or procedures.

On every install we have configured 'Automatically detect connection state' is the default. We have setup hundreds of clients using outlook rpc http and have never had to change the connection state.

I'm not an authority but I would be very surprised if it wasn't the default.

Have you ever had a dial-up that could have changed this? Not sure why the 'Connect with the network' option hasn't worked, but I've never tested it.

Thanks again guys,

We are going to replace and increase the memory on the server. The issue is that we do see very similar problems on other hardware with AMD processors and mainboards.

We are installing only Intel now and have done so for the last six months, but that doesn't help with the older servers we maintain. Of course we don't see any of these problems with Intel hardware.

Will post reports on how the memory upgrades go.

Hi Guys,

Tried both your ideas and the server is still unhappy. A couple of new "features" have presented themselves now on this server.

CALs disappear
In Task Manager the processes are no longer listed on the processes tab and the performance details are no longer on the performance tab.

A weekly reboot stops the server from crashing but I'd rather get this resolved.

One other thing to add. I added the /3G /USERVA=3030 switches to the boot.ini file and the server crashed with same symtoms as before but within 6-12 hours. It seemed to accelerate the process.

Afterwards I read this http://weblogs.asp.net/oldnewthing/archive/2004/08/06/209840.aspx article which brings me to the conclusion that the server has memory management problems.

I believe the mainboard is AMD and the processor is an Operton 244.

the procedure worked a treat. Earlier I attempted an install with the AV services disabled but that didn't help.

Time to look at the second server now.

Will give Mark's procedure a go over the weekend. Your comment on AV has got us thinking as all three servers were installed over a couple of month around 12months ago. It is quite possible that the engineer who did the installation has used the same av package/version. Time to investigate.

Attempted the net stop exifs as you suggested but the service could not be stopped.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>net stop exifs
The following services are dependent on the EXIFS service.
Stopping the EXIFS service will also stop these services.

Is there a way to kill the service once i've stopped IS and POP3 connector or would that be inadvisable.

Thank you for looking into this problem. It has been troubling us for sometime now. We are at a loss as to why these three servers are doing this. All three were built by the same engineer during a three month period last summer and he is no longer with the company.

What ever information you require I will post.
