Hi Matt,

have you looked at sections on Technet such as http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd540850(WS.10).aspx

I would also check what is / isn;t working. If it is just WSS then things should be fine. If AD replication or Exchange is not fully functional then you might want to do a re-install / migration to ensure things are going smoothly

Migration issues

I'm trying to migrate a clients sbs2003 to sbs2008 and after logging into the sbs 2008 box it reports the installation failed.

However, AD is replicating as well as Exchange in installed, Sharepoint is installed but does not work. I've tried running some wisards, move data worked for everything apart from sharepoint data, when I run the internet setup task it reports it cannot configure and to run the repair wizards.

Can I reinstall the wizards and sharepoint? or does it mean a rebuild? I'm running a virtual sbs2003 as the client is using the same hardware for the 2008 box. So can I remove installed exchange/ad parts rather than restoring from tape? (which is out of action as its attached the 2008 box)

Server line-up for small businesses (and home) is increasing in options (or complexity for some) - SBS 2008, Home, Foundation, Windows Standard Server or BPOS - how do you choose?

This is a long running question that people ask me - how to position the various server options from Microsoft for small businesses. The more choice Microsoft offers, the more complex it can become if you do not have a starting point to find the right product for a customer. So, Home Server, Foundation Server and SBS - what is it all about, especially when you look at something like Windows 7 or BPOS too?

N.B. To get a detailed feature comparison between SBS 2003 and SBS 2008 have a look at the excellent work of Sean at http://sbs.seandaniel.com/2008/08/what-different-between-sbs-2003-and-sbs.html.

Well, in the home or the smaller sized business market (think sweet spot of 1-7 users IMHO) there are a number of MS products that could fit the bill…

Windows Client PC as a server (don't do this for businesses)
Windows Home Server
Foundation server
Windows Server
Small Business Server
Online solution

Server Options

I suspect people know the options here, but here is a very short run-down on each and why you might or might not look at them:

Windows 7 Client PC as a server

Great to share files between a few PCs on a trusted network. Only with Windows 7 do you start to get better sharing security via the home group and many server oriented pieces of software can't run on it. Great for home hub (my Media Center does a bit of this), but please save your self trouble and get a server for the work environment. You will save of time and money of management very quickly in a business. Also note that server software will often not install on a Client PC.

Windows Home Server

This is a fantastic home hub server with functionality to hold and protect your shared files by duplicating them, backing up desktop PCs and providing remote access. Today it is built on Windows Server 2003 technology, but it does the job well. If in a business you simply want a place to store files and backups without managed security or any other server functionality and web based accessed to those files, it can do an OK job. Foundation server

A simple implementation of Windows Standard server with a limitation of 15 users on the server, it must be the root of the domain and cannot have trust relationships. There are no SBS-like wizards, so this is pure Windows Server management. You can add products like Windows SharePoint Services to this product. One nice feature is no requirement for the Windows CAL (all other CALs still required). Also some software may refuse to work on Foundation Server. Windows Standard Server

The fully functional base platform of all Windows Servers. This provides Web, File sharing, domain security and management and a platform for other tools such as WSUS and WSS. As there are so many options and configuration choices for Windows Server some might find this overwhelming and beyond their understanding. While there are wizards they are focused on configuration rather than simplifying overall IT setup for a small business.

Small Business Server

A Server designed to be easy to configure and use for small businesses that provides all their Server IT in one package. This provides file server functionality, intranet and internet access and management, server and security management, remote access, e-mail, calendar and contact functionality and much more. The configuration process is all designed to be simple and driven by business need rather than technical implementation and wizards translate the business need into technical changes.

Online solution

An online solution, such as BPOS enables all e-mail, calendar and contact management, as well as Instant Messenger and presence information and hosted SharePoint to be made available to users without the need to install a server to deliver this. You must be connected to the internet to use this functionality and it does not solve any "in-house" IT functions which means these need to be separately managed.

This leaves some simple questions to ask to qualify which products are available to your customers:

How many users will access the system - if <15 then all available, if > 20 then only Windows Server, SBS or hosted are options
Do they want a common management of users with the ability to log in on any PC and see their files, if so only Domain Account Management will work for them
How much control over e-mail, quotas and the rest of their IT destiny do they want (BPOS has little control without cost impact and all others except SBS do not have e-mail at all)

I appreciate there are many more questions, but I hope this makes it easier to see where it all fits. Hopefully the two diagrams below will help a little. You may notice that I have not included on-line solutions in the model below because they either only overlap with SBS 2008 (Exchange and SharePoint) or the answer depends on the task at hand as to where it fits and who is providing it.

How to size the hardware required for SBS 2008

This question has been asked many times and was once again asked today on an internal forum. It is hard to come up with an explicit answer, but I feel I can give you some (personal, non-binding, your mileage may vary, please take with a pinch of salt and don’t sue me) opinions. For SBS 2003 the non-scientific sizing appeared to go like this:

“between 2 & 4GB of RAM, depending on number of users”. I often saw a machine for around 25 users with 4GB of RAM and there was headroom.
Disk – don’t buy 1.5TB disks, but don’t by 30GB either. Buy largish and try to size data before you make the decision
1 CPU or 2, or perhaps more importantly, a box that can take 1 CPU or 2?

The the time SBS 2008 arrived the difference in cost of a 2GB or 4GB box was trivial. Now SBS 2008, if you want to be scientific about it would look something like this:

Think Windows Server 2008 for x users, plus Exchange sizing for x users plus some wiggle for all the SBS 2008 bits, including WSS, Backup.

Since working all the above out, I tend to use the following guides:

4GB of RAM for 1 User, 8GB for more than 30 or so, however this is MY opinion and not tested
Disk as above, mirrored in h/w (yes, mirrored, not raid 5)
Dual core for a starter system going to multi-cpu & multi core for a very busy system
The Premium node is sized as any other Windows Server 2008 system SQL or Terminal Services or ISA… etc

Now while this might sound very sketchy, I’ve never benchmarked any SBS systems and this is my rule of thumb. I’ve seen some 5-person businesses that stressed a 4GB 2-cpu Xeon SBS 2003 system and I’ve seen 40 people lightly load a 1 cpu, 2GB RAM system. Sizing is not a science and you should always put in more than you need as it is easier for something to be sat idle than to be “in need”.

Finally, on the sizing, consider your own system. Put in SBS 2008 for yourself and can use yourself as a reference story to your customers about anything from sizing to how you use it and how it makes a difference to your business.

If you think the system that is running this blog is a 32-bit Windows Server 2008 system with 2GB of RAM. It serves about 150,000 hits a day (excluding all the pictures that are on some pages), has two monitoring databases and one reporting engine. The databases are around 30GB in total. It uses approximately 5% of the 2 cores from a quad core processor system and that system is running Hyper-V. The other VMs are running a HomeServer and my SBS 2008 system. My SBS 2008 system has 4GB or memory for 1 user and is using 2.9GBs. The processor can be a bit spikey, but is often around the 5%, 45 or 80% range, which is why you need more memory, but it is doing things in the background, like mail etc.

Set up Microsoft Office Live Small Business Web sites

The Console setup process (Once SBS is set up, how to do the basic configuration through the management console) sets up SBS 2008 for use. One of the options is for a spit personality Office Live for Small Businesses solution. Why split, well the e-mail items are held on the SBS 2008 Exchange server, as will the report site services, but the public web site and WSS external collaboration sites will be hosted on the Office Live servers. This means that things like DNS need a bit more management, but that can all be handled for you.

This is how I configured mine:

Start the process from the console and say I want a new site. Since SBS 2008 already knows the external address of the SBS box, it offers to enable the DNS to be redirected to Office Live for the www.mydomain.com address

We then get into the Office Live sign-up process via the web. One word of note here, I had installed the box as a US system, not a UK system, so it took me to the US site. If you change the language settings in the browser (Tools/Options/Language) to EN-GB, then you will get the UK site. You can see form the pictures below that the sign-up process is simple and secure.

Once you have finished on the web site it all you need to do is to complete the sign in details below.

Now for me, that was not the end of the story – the verification e-mail was simply not arriving, even though I requested it to be resent several times. Eventually I discovered it was the spam filter settings rejecting the mail. I have reported this as a bug into Microsoft, but in the mean time, to overcome the situation, have a look at How to change spam settings on Exchange 2007 / SBS 2008 to enable some / all / more spam to be delivered to an account for analysis to see how I resolved it.

Microsoft has launched its equivalent of Google Docs - but without the ability to edit documents. It’s left the actual editing of documents to Office itself and offers Office Live Workspace as a way for individuals and small businesses to share files on the web.
A nifty Office add-in can be downloaded that enables you to save and open your docs straight to and from the Workspace - a feature Google Docs doesn’t have. There’s also a multiple document upload tool.
We don’t know about you, but all these different web-based apps are slightly confusing. However, aside from the ability to edit (which is a loss), the saving of documents straight to the web is a major leap forward for Microsoft.
Office Live Workspace was among the first of the new wave of online services in Microsoft’s software plus services vision that Bill Gates has been so fond of speaking about.

Small Business Server 2003 Best Practices Analyzer Updated

The SBS 2003 Best Practices Analyzer configuration file has been updated with new rules. There are approximately 100 new rules and many pre-existing rules have been improved based on your feedback.
To check to see if you have the latest configuration file go to Start>All Programs>SBS Best Practices Analyzer, then click on the About the Best Practices Analyzer link. The updated configuration file version is 2.1.18.0.
If you still have the old version (2.1.4.0), click on the Updates and Customer Feedback link. Then click on the Check for Updates Now link.
Some of the new rules include:

Expanded checks for Blue Shield issues relating to WSUS
Checks for the .Net Framework version for Companyweb
Resolved some issues with the WSS and DST update checks
Checks the SQL Default instance for service pack level/version
Information messages regarding Forest/Domain Functional Levels and Exchange Functional level
Checks that KB 911829 is installed for OWA/Vista compatibility
DNS Forward lookup zones are set to allow secure dynamic updates
Verifies IIS keep-alives are enabled
Checks ISA 2004 service pack level, and if ISA 2000 is installed recommend that it be upgraded to ISA 2004 using SBS 2003 SP1 media
Verifies that no restrictions have been placed on the IWAM or IUSR accounts for workstation or logon hours
Checks to see if the LANNIC guid appears to be the internal interface
Checks for MSFW instance for service pack level/version
Warning if NIC drivers are over a year old
Verifies that the reverse lookup zone is configured for allowing secure dynamic updates
Verifies that WSUS is integrated with SBS R2
Informational message to show the AD schema version level
Attempts to ping other domain controllers to test connectivity to them
Verifies that SSL is not required on the /exchange-oma virtual directory
Checks that the server has been updated with KB 926505 for Outlook/Vista compatibility
Checks for Windows SharePoint Services v3.0 SP1
Checks for Windows Server Update Services v3.0 SP1

Note: Please remember if you see the error that Windows SBS 2003 Service Pack 1 not installed that SBS 2003 SP1 is made up of 5 parts (Windows, Exchange, Windows SharePoint Services service packs, XP SP2 update, and the SBS 2003 service pack itself). If you are getting this error then you may have Windows Service Pack 2 installed but would appear the SBS 2003 SP1 itself is still not installed.
