Hi,

I've done a bit of reading up on migrating SBS2003 to SBS2008, however the situation i find myself in is a little different.

Basically, two companies which both have SBS2003 are looking to merge, with a single SBS2008 at the new premises.

Is such a migration possible and even worth considering? I'm assuming one SBS2003 server would be migrated via the SBS  migration wizard, and then second would have to be migrated using a more 'manual' / 'hands--on' approach using ADMT?

Any advice or views on this are most welcome!

Regards,
Robin

Thanks for the input, I hadn't though of merging the two SBS2003 domains first!

I shall try the two options on some test servers and see which works best.

You have two choices - one is to migrate one of the domains into the second SBS 2003 domain and then migrate that once to SBS 2008 or to do as you suggest.

What I would do would be:

  1. merge the SBS 2003 domains (ADMT as per SBS 2003 migration docs - ensure you re-template the users etc)
  2. migrate the e-mail
  3. migrate the documents / files
  4. migrate any databases

Now that you have 1 SBS 2003 AD, I would then perform a SBS 2003-> SBS 2008 migration.

Remember to keep backups of both servers and even to practise in a lab first
