Hello,

Big SmileHas anyone upgraded Sql Server 2005 Workgroup edition to Sql Server 'STANDARD' edition in SBS Server 2003 premium?  If so, any

problems I should be aware of?  I am currently studing for the Small Business Specialist exam and own a copy of Sql Server 2005 standard

version and want to install it on my SBS 2003 server premium and need to know if this can be done.

Thanks in advance.

Technically I am not aware of any difficulties, however....

  • SBS 2003 R2 support SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition
  • Your SBS Licenses will not cover your SQL installation
  • You can not update all databases as some applications require SQL 2000 / MSDE still

Other than that you are fine.  I had SQL 2005 running on my server before I moved it to a R2 system.

Hi David

Just wanted to say this is a wonderful site. Anyway my question to you is in your above statement you mentioned "SBS R2 support SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition" does this mean this version of sbs only supports workgroup edition and not standard? Second question is I have a SBS 2003 Premuim Server with ISA Server and sharepoint and Backup Exec installed will this automatically upgrade these databases or will there be a risk factor where SBS 2003 R2 Premuim Technologies will be incompaitable?

Regards

Clinton

SQL 2005 Std should work on SBS, but it is not a SBS option, so you would have to buy SQL Std and CALs (or per proc licensing).  When you install SQL, unless you give it an existing instance name, it does NOT upgrade the existing databases.

hi david

So then from a risk assessment point of view it would be better for me to get an addition Server  as a windows 2003 STD member and migrate the Databases across
