SBS 2008 Install process (in pictures)

Having announced the SBS preview at SBS 2008 RC0 Public Preview I’ve tried to capture the SBS install process in pictures – I don’t think it needs much explanation.  If you have an OEM then much of this will be resolved by the Answer kit.  To find out about the OEM install process, have a look at TechNet Edge Video- SBS 2008 setup.

Other blogger's have covered the release:

http://sbs.seandaniel.com/2008/05/windows-small-business-server-2008_28.html

http://blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/archive/2008/05/28/announcing-small-business-server-2008-rc0-public-preview.aspx

http://blogs.technet.com/sbsaustralia/archive/2008/05/29/sbs-2008-public-beta-now-available-come-get-it.aspx

SBS 2008 starts with something akin to Windows Server 2008 and / or Vista Setup

boot2-1   winpe01  winpe02

boot 4 boot 5 boot 6

boot2-2

Once this is completed, there are extra steps that are specific to SBS 2008:

It is possible that your system does not meet quite the right specification – mine has less than 4GB of RAM, while not a blocker, is a warning!finish01  finish02

You need to set the clock correctly (time and time zone) to ensure all the certificates work correctly

 finish03 finish05

Install updates is a good idea!!

finish06

Some more installs

finish07 finish08

Enter the information about your organisation

 finish10 finish11

Now it tries to name your domain, user etc.

finish12 finish14 finish15 finish16

The marketing messages while install happens:

finish17 finish18 finish19

finish20 finish21 finish22

finish30 finish31 finish32

finish33

That is the setup part of the process done.  The next entry will be the SBS console process to finish the install (and a few mistakes I made).  See all the other SBS 2008 items at http://davidoverton.com/blogs/doverton/archive/tags/SBS+2008/default.aspx

There is a Step-by-Step video which demonstrates SBS 2008 installation at:

www.netometer.com/.../sbs-2008-installation

I would add that you can meet two types of errors during the installation – Blocking and Warning errors. If you do not meet the minimum requirements for partition size – 40GB (40960MB), and Memory – 2GB, you are getting a Blocking error which effectively means that you can not proceed.

The Screencast at NetoMeter.com demonstrates such a scenario too.

Dean

One additional thing I thought I would comment is that SBS 2008 RC0, which appears to be what you installed, will allow you to install with only 2GB Ram, giving you a warning.  There is on the other hand RC1 which is available now and unfortuneately it got changed from a warning to a block.  You can not install RC1 without 4GB minimum ram.

Abs, Are you running Windows Server 2003 or above?  You need to lift the AD domain and forest level up to 2003 at least.
