Office 2007, XML and standards

Well, the day has finally arrived, the XML file formats used in Office 2007 are now ECMA standards.

This is something that can be used to extract data from office files without having to write your own document decoders (something I used to do for a living waaay back when).  XML file formats is not a new thing - Office 2003 XML formats are available, like the 2007 ones, royalty free, but this time a standards body has approved the standard.

For reading I would suggest http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA102058151033.aspx followed by the ones below.

Now, you know I'm just going to say why doesn't Microsoft adopt the ODF? The ODF is an ISO standard and at the ECMA, IBM was not happy about this. May be then Microsoft wouldn't have to do all this lobbying in Massachussetts just because they want to use the ODF.

Novell hasn't helped matters because under its agreement with Microsoft it's going ship a version of OpenOffice.org supporting Office 2007 XML format.

I don't know the answer to this, but at a guess - perhaps ODF did not fit our needs and people always complain about Microsoft's Extend and Embrace past behaviour, so it was time to start from scratch.

Also, having played with both, some would say ODF is not always the easiest to XPath data out of.
