Installing Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same system

[updated 16:42 9th May 2007 with url for MS Support of this]
[updated 9:45 22nd July 2007 with url to fix for install dialog coming up with word]

I was recently asked in Office 2003 and Office 2007 can co-exist on the same system.  The answer is yes, except for Outlook which as in previous versions get a little precious if this is attempted (it will not let you do this, btw).  You can choose to have them both installed to the same drive or one to an external hard drive, it does not matter.  The key option is when installing Office 2007 is to customise the options and select to NOT uninstall the previous versions.

When you install both copies of Office to be installed on 1 machine that switching between Word 2003 and Word 2007 will result in an install dialog box coming up.  See How to get rid of the installer / configuration dialog when running Office 2007 and Office 2003 on the same system - for Vista and other versions of Windows to fix this.

For more support information, look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928091 which details the install order and any key requirements

Thanks

David: I own Office 2003 Pro and Office 2007 Pro and have them both running on a Vista Home Premium dual core laptop with 2 gig RAM. . I had some problems with Outlook 2007 and called the Office 2007 support people. I was told by the tech support person that Microsoft does NOT support having multiple versions of Office on the same PC. because Microsoft Updates will result in system file incompatibilities and system instability. I have since turned off auto update. Suggestions?

Mark,

great question - I have updated the blog post to include a link to the support page that tells you how to do this.  Call back Microsoft and discuss it with them again!

Is there a way to get rid of the installer whenever you fire up a program from office 2003 and office 2007. Like launching word 03 and then launching word 2007?

Les,

out of curiosity, which did you install 1st?  Also, if you have a look at the link in the blog post that states the install order and requirements - did you vary from it at all, for example, trying to have both versions of Outlook installed or installing Office 2007 after Office 2003?

thanks

David,

I installed the trial version of office 2007 and used it for a month or so with Vista Premium.  I then decided to uninstall it and install office 2003.  The PSTs from 2007 were still there and when I ran Outlook 2003 it picked them up and tried to start.  I then get the following error "Microsoft Office has stopped working", options: "check online for solution and close program" (nothing found) or "close the program".

I have since uninstalled Office 2003 and removed all profiles and even the Outlook folder that held the PSTs.  But reinstalling Office 2003 yields the same error when trying to run Outlook.

Is there something I need to remove to allow Office 2003 to work when reinstalled, Outlook 2003 seems to be the only program that is having problems?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dane

Hi. I have a problem with Office 2003 and 2007 on the same system. When I run Word 2003 and then Word 2007, the latter executes Office 2007 setup before it starts, and keeps me waiting for a few minutes... and then, when I run Word 2003, it executes Office 203 setup. Is this normal?

Rob Grayson wrote re: Installing Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same system
on Fri, Jun 22 2007 12:27 PM

David,

Thanks for the article. I've recently installed Office 2007 on a computer that previously had Office 2003 installed. During the install process, I chose to uninstall all the 2003 applications apart from Word. Once I'd confirmed that Word 2007 wa spropermy installed and working, I then uninstalled Word 2003 too.

However, found I needed to reinstall Word 2003. I really like Word 2007, but am a professional translator and need to use certain plugins for my job, which seem to work much faster with Word 2003 than Word 2007. Now, when I start up 2007 after using Word 2003, I get a startup/configuration message as described in the Knowledge Base article you linked to:

"If you have multiple versions of Word installed on the computer, the Windows Installer may start when you start Microsoft Office Word 2007. And, a message that states that Windows Installer is preparing to install Word may be displayed. You may receive this message before Word starts. The Windows Installer runs whenever the version of Word that you start is not the one that is registered."

I then have to wait several minutes before I can use Word 2007. I realise that I did not strictly adhere to the installation order set out in the article, since I reinstalled Word 2003 after Word 2007 was already installed. I found another article (not on the Microsoft site) which recommended doing a "repair" installation of 2007, which it said would have the same effect as doing a fresh install of 2007. I ran the "repair" installation, which seemed to be churning away for quite a while, but the end result is still the same - each time I want to switch back to 2007 after using 2003, I have to wait ages for it to run through a configuration process.

Sorry for the length of this message, but wanted to make sure I spelt things out clearly. I can boil it down to two questions:

1. Is it possible to have Word 2003 and Word 2007 installed on the same PC, and to be able to switch "seamlessly" between them, without having to wait for a configuration process each time?

2. Assuming it is possible, what do I need to do to get it to happen on my machine? Should I completely uninstall both versions of Office and then reinstall in the correct order (Word 2003 followed by Office 2007)?

Thanks in anticipation,

Rob

Hernan, Dane,

Office 2007 PSTs and Office 2003 PSTs can be in defferent file formats.  If you still have the old PSTs on your system then you will have a problem.  If you go and look in c:\users\<username>\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook (you may need to run an elevated command prompt to get there) and you will find a bundle of files - try renaming them or going up a directory and renaming outlook to something else.

I too am having the same problems that Rob Grayson is experiencing. I installed the programs in the correct order but put Office 2003 in a different install folder Program Files\Microsoft Office 2003 rather than just Microsoft Office...

I was hoping that maybe I could configure the Open With menu or the Send to Menu to control which version the file opens in, but I can't seem to work out how to change the Open With menu in Vista. Excel works well always opening in the one you have open but Word and Power Point are a real pain. If there is any solution to this I would love to know.

OK, I have just done the Vista with Office 2003 install including the install of BCM.  I will try to load Office 2007 on that system to further document it and also try to give you an "open in Word 2003 / open in word 2007" option on the file.

I am a work at home dad this week with my wife away from home for the week, so the time I get to do these things is highly dependant on Lizzy (my 1 year old) and her sleep patterns.

bear with me.

thanks

Try this:

1. Close all instances of Word

2. Click Start and then click Run.

3. In the Run dialog box, type regedit and then click OK.

4. Select the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

6. Type NoReReg for the name of the new value.

7. Double-click the NoReReg value.

8. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, change the value to 1 and then click OK.

9. Quit Registry Editor and then start Word normally.

Let me know if this works

I can now confirm that running this command stops the dialogs from appearing when switching between versions of Word 2003 and 2007.  Press Windows Key+R (start/run) and paste this text:

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

onto a single line, press enter and once Word 2007 is run and goes through the configuration process one more time (if at all), you should not see it again.

Thanks heaps for that David, it works very well!!!!

Any thoughts on the Open With... option to decide which app to open a file with? the way I work is to browse through explorer first to find the file that I want to work with. It is very difficult for me to switch back to opening the application first and then using File > Open to then browse for the fle.

One thing I have done is install Start ++ (www.brandontools.com) and set up shortcuts w3 and w7 for word 2003 and 2007 etc which helps a lot also, but I would love to be able to choose from explorer.

Thanks so much for your help David.

Our academic environment requires that we have both Office 2003 and Office 2007, with Office 2003 being the default application.

This can be done by installing 2007, and then 2003, adding the NoReReg dword to the registry for Word. All programs use 2003 applications by default.

The Problem that we are having however is with Access. When Access 2007 is run, the Office 2007 setup runs, which changes all of the applications back to Office 2007 as default. (Everything, word, excel, powerpoint, etc)

When Access 2003 is run after this, it runs the Office 2003 setup, however this only changes Access 2003 back to the default app. The other apps remain 2007 defaults.

The NoReReg tag does not work for Access.

Any thoughts?

Jodie Miners wrote re: Installing Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same system

I too am having an issue with the NoReReg tag for Access and having huge problems with Access. I am just about to re-build my PC without Office 2003 and 2007 on there together - it just doesn't seem to work. My problem is that a brand new Access Database created in Access 2003 with VBA code in it creates a reference to Access 12 and I can not work out how to get rid of it or replace the reference with the Access 11 reference. Therefore none of my VBA code will work, plus whenever I go to create any new code using the wizards, Access crashes. I am compeltely at the end of my tether with it.

Jodie Miners wrote re: Installing Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same system

Wow, I found a fix for my Access References problem - it is only a problem running 2 access versions in Vista. Allen Browne an Access MVP has the answers here allenbrowne.com/bug-17.html. I used the option to run as administrator and it works well.

Now if we can only get the NoReReg option working for access all will be well.

If I were to set it up in a startup file on the local computer - exactly what would I include and would that run for a limited user that logs on as well.  Because in order to make changes to the registry - a person needs to be an administrator.  This is in a lab setting (one room) and students will be loggin on.  All the rest of my labs I have only office 2007.

Comment for Jennifer Gardner, a batch file ran from the startup folder in the all users group should work for this.  Limited users can make changes to their own settings even if they are in the registry.  I tested this on the Guest user account and this worked fine.  What you would need to do is create a batch file (Can be any name you want followed by ".bat" without quotes) and put the previously given fix in it (reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1)  Then move the batch file to the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" folder.  At this point the fix should be applied every time someone logs into the computer.  If you don't know how to make a batch file a quick search on the internet should give you some examples.

My husband just installed Office Professional 2007, and he had a previous version of Office 2003 loaded on that computer.  When trying to access the online features for Office 2007, it won't let him use them and says he has illegal versions of 2003 that he must uninstall. He called tec support, and they also said he had to uninstall 2003, but he cannot even find the program to uninstall. Also, he bought the 2007 thinking it would get rid of an aggravating "microsoft is preparing to install..." window that kept popping up, and prevented use of Outlook (which is still not working).  Suggestions would be so very welcome!

Jennifer, Bill,

that will only work providing you have UAC turned off on Vista, or your users accept the elevation prompt every time they log on.  If you have a windows domain, set a group policy to do this rather than having the batch file.

Uwe,

I believe that the OEM should support OEM products and I thin kthat MS will support you as a partner - you might have to pay for it, but I presume that your customer pays you?

Also, have you tried putting in the CD with Office on it and doing a repair on it?

Dave,

Thank you for the valuable information.  I am wondering if you would know how the OWC (Office Web Component) works when both 2003 and 2007 versions of office are installed?  Ie: if an application uses OWC for a pivot table which version of the pivot will be loaded?

Thank you in advance

Andre,

1st of, have a look at blogs.msdn.com/.../668544.aspx to learn more about what is happening with OWC and Office 2007.  Given the fact that OWC is also a client component of Office, my guess is that the 2003 engine will fire up.  You can learn how to install the OWC components with Office 2007 at technet2.microsoft.com/.../0dee24b3-09af-485b-b5ed-d4b879dcc8f61033.mspx which I think strongly backs my theory Smile

David,

Great tips!  Like a few others that have commented, I am also having trouble with abolishing the install/configure message with Access.  When I entered the registry, (regedit) there is no Options folder under Access, so it would make sense that running the following would not work:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Access\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

Is there a solution that I am overlooking??  Thanks.

I have Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007 loaded on my laptop.  I currently have Outlook 2000 and everything is working GREAT.  I have been looking at some of the features in Outlook 2003 and would like to upgrade and download this onto my computer.  Will this cause problems, are there steps I need to take before loading or do you recommend not mixing the two?

Thank you in advance!

Hi David,

Wondering if you have some answers to this situation... I have a IBM ThinkPad with Vista Business (OEM).  It came with a trial of Office 2007 installed.  Had to uninstall Office 2007 and install Office Professional Edition 2003.

Lately, have been having issues with Word.  Documents are not saving, getting several error messages in Word, for example:  "Word could not create the work file.  Check the temp environment variable."  "Word has insufficient memory.  Do you want to save Document 1 as a Rescue Document?"    Anyhow, one of the solutions on The Word MVP site (http://word.mvps.org) was to edit a section of the registry.  Well, what I discovered was that the registry still has Office 2007 stuff in it.  How likely is it that the Office 2007 registry "junk" is creating issues with Office 2003?  Any ideas.  Can you give me step-by-step instructions on how to clean up the registry?  Thank you in advance for you time and attention.

Respectfully,

Estella

Hi - Great info on here.  I'm struggling to make Office 2007 the default suite of apps (or Excel 2007 to be more precise) now I have Excel 2003 installed.

There is a specifc need to have both installed (which I won't go into) but suffice to say, with both installed, Excel 2003 seems to open as default at file launch, unless Excel 2007 is already open, in which case it opens 2007 version of excel.exe

Do you have any idea which area I have to play with (Registry?) in order to determine which excel.exe get;s launch by default.  I tried fiddling with Folder Options in order to determine which program launches which extension, however no matter how many times I try pointing the extension to excel.exe (2007 version) still only seems to recognise excel 2003 (I suspect a Path or something at work)

Any info you could give me would be great.

I installed Office 2003 AFTER installing Office 2007 (yes, got tired of the 2007 interface and searching for hidden functions), but then frequently got the 'Configuring office' pop-up, for example when starting a new mail in Outlook 2007.

The solution mentioned above:

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

seems to get rid of these annoying install screens.

Thanks a lot !!!

To default to Excel 2003 you have to reset your file association from 2007 to 2003.

Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar

Start>Run "C:\your path to\office11\excel.exe" /regserver

That's it !

Apologies if this has been asked before but i am in a hurry and dont have time to trawl through the above answers!

I have both 2003 and 2007 installed.

How do i set my laptop up so that when i click open a .doc file, 2003 opens up and if i click open a .docx file, 2007 opens?

Ive tried looking at File Types within the Folder Options but they both point to winword.exe and 2007 continues to be the app that takes over. (I can open both individually as per the fix with the dialog installer box, that is fixed).

Any help would be much appriciated!

So I installed Word 2003 into a different directory from that suggested (probably not required) then ran your reg fix. I then had to run it again with "12.0" as the Office version - everything now works perfectly, even though I installed in the wrong order.

Thanks again,

Thanks

Ken Roberts wrote re: Installing Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same system

Important clarification on the "regserver" commands given.

Excel 11 (2003) files have the extension .xls

Excel 12 (2007) files have the extension .xlsx

You would think that Windows would be smart enough to differentiate between the two - and it is.  But the install of 2007 is dumb enough to take over BOTH extensions, and after the install, all "xls" files begin opening in Excel 2007.

The workaround that has been posted is to set Excel so that it "defaults" to ALWAYS open v11 or so that it "defaults" to ALWAYS open v12  -  by the /regserver command.

Actually - you want the Excel file to open in the correctly associated Excel version - not to have any "Default" for both xls and xlsx

So all you really want is to fix Excel so that it correcty see ".xls" as v11 and ".x;sx" as v12.  Therefore you only need to enter one of the two commands given previously:

Start / Run . . .

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Excel.exe" /regserver  <ENTER>

(you need the double-quotes since there is a space):

DONE !!

Now you can double-click any Excel file and it will open in the appropriate version application (xls files will open into Excel 2003  and  xlsx files will open into Excel 2007).

I have a few macro's that I wrote in 2003 and am now running in 2007.  So far they are running perfectly.  One of them is almost 3000 lines of code !!  You need to save the file with the macro Excel extension, "xlsm".

Still, I would not say that "any" macro from Excel 2003 will run perfectly in Excel 2007, since there are so many differences - but so far so good.

Hi Alpha,

You don't need to worry about compatibility between the two systems.  Office 2007 can save just fine in Office 2003 format and if you have used a feature that does not exist in Office 2003 it will tell you when you save.  Just remember to choose Office 97-2003 when saving.

You can also load Office 2003, but remember to deselct Outlook 2003, add the various service packs and also run repair on Office 2007 once you have completed this process.

Thanks

Mariela,

If you want to install Office 2003 & 2007 on a server you would have the same restrictions - i.e. only one version of Outlook.

I'm not sure what the benefit would be of doing this.  The user who it is installed for would still have both version present and sometimes fighting.

You can chose when installing Office 2007 if you want to remove Office 2003.  You can have both running at the same time, but only one version of Outlook can be installed.

To Dee:

I think you are asking the wrong question. If all you want to do is open and edit or produce Word 2003 documents, you don't need Word 2003 at all. Just set Word 2007 to save files in the Word 97-2003 format.

Go to Word Options, Save and choose "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)" in the dialog and click OK. All future documents will default to the older format.

Outlook works just fine, while the Office apps do not. After launching the first time (Word for example), it will never launch again - it just crashes every time.

This is even occurring after a clean install of XP with fresh apps installed (in the correct order according to MS). If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them!

@Speziak,

As far as your PC is concerned it is just opening a file or piece of data.  There is no ability to say if I'm in Office 2003, open the office 2003 tool and if I'm in Office 2007, use the 2007 tool.  To that end it is simply opening the default editor for that product, which is the latest version of Office installed on your PC.

Thanks

I currently have Office 2003 Pro installed (Vista OS) and want to install Office 2007 Outlook, Word, Power point & Excel only as I have trouble with workgroup security in Access 2007.  Will I have to uninstall Outlook, Word, Powerpoint & Excel 2003 or will 2007 simply upgrade them.  If I need to uninstal them, how do I do this from the control panel as it seems to view Office as a complete package & not individual programs (I'm too nervous to click Yes when asked the question "are you sure you want to uninstal Office Pro 2003.

I have limited skills - knowing just enough to be dangerous!

@Jayne,

When you install Office 2007 you can customise it and chose which products get installed and un-installed if you customise the install options.  Office 2007 installl will do the uninstalling.

Hi David,

I have just replaced my old PC and it has come with Microsoft Office 7 trial...I hate it! and my old saved emails don't want to open properly or at all. I would rather like to go back entirely to MS Office Student and Teacher 2003. Can I just load it and request it to remove Office 7 or do I still need Office 7 on my PC?

Thanks

Sons

@Sonya,

You will need to load Windows Live (http://download.live.com) to open you e-mails properly on WIndows 7. Office 2007 trial / STE 2003 probably don't come with Outlook, so Office is not to blame.

If you have a non-OEM copy of Office 2003 and you have removed it from your old PC then you should be able to load it onto your new PC.

Having said that, Office 2010 is going to launch soon, so perhaps waiting for that might be a good idea?

thanks

For associating .doc to 2003 and .docx to 2007, pretty simple solution is to rename the 2003 winword.exe file to word2003.exe and right click on an old .doc word document and "open with", browse to newly created word2003.exe and tick "always use this", and viola - .doc is associated with 2003 and .docx is 2007.

Thanks for all the help. This got me most of the way. I was getting the installer popup everytime I opened an Excel or Word file. I added the reg entries:

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

It didn't make a difference.

Then just for the hell of it I did a repair on Office 2007. Now all better!

Hope it helps someone!

I have Office 2003 on a new Windows 7 machine.  When I am working on Power Point,  I keep getting a pop-up window that says:

"The Office Assistant requires Microsft Agent 2.0 or Later.  This product is available on the Office System Pack"

How do I turn off the Office Assistant, so that this window will stop popping up?  It pops up every few seconds, making it almost impossible to work.

Will this fix work on Windows 7 64-bit PCs also?

And if I have office 2007 and only Word 2003, which of the two commands should I run (I don't remember which Word/Office I installed first), the 11.0 or 12.0?

Thanks,

Hi,

installing part of Office 2007 (such as PowerPoint) is possible provided you select a custom install when running setup.

Thanks

I have installed Office 2003 and then Office 2007 on user workstation. Now the problem is that word etc other programs work properly but I have problems with file assosiations with excel 03 and 07. I want *.xls files open in the older excel because users have used to it.

I have changed file assosiations to point for excel2003. And still they opens in office 2007

And the reason why I want to have both office suites on couple of workstations is that that another client software needs access 07 and our company is going to update office 07 soo so some users can practise with newer suite.

Any advice very much appreciated.

For Windows 7 64-bit and Office 2010 in combination with Office 2003, the following easy procedure will work:

1. run cmd.exe as an administrator

2. reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

3. reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

4. reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Powerpoint\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

Note: Access 2003 / Access 2010 can not be fixed this way. There is no known solution for Access.

I use Office 4.3, Office 97 and Office 2003 all installed on the same computer without any problem at all. The reason I have these 3 versions is that I have MS Access databases in all versions and I absolutely refuse to convert them. And furthermore, I do not install them in any particular order whatsoever - but what I do is install each version of Office in its own folder - e.g. C:\MS Office 4.3, C:\Program Files\MS Office 97, and C:\Program Files\ MS Office 2003. I intend to stick with this set-up when I next install Office 2010. One thing to bear in mind, though, is that you HAVE to decide which version of Outlook to use and then keep that version and do not install any other version. Also, if you have issues with Access 97, it means that you have to upgrade your Microsoft Jet engine.

Hi - i don't know if you are still running this blog - but I have a question. I am running 03 and 07 on same computer. When I am using Excel it no longer allows me to link between 2 seperate workbooks. Is there an option I need to click on 03 to make this do'able? In the preferences or something?

Hi Iau,

I'm not sure what Trados is (I found a few hits on the web), but you need to check with them if it is compatible with Office 2007.  Office and Windows are two seperate products, so you could have Office 2007 with Windows 7, Vista or XP and so on.

Thanks

Hi David

Appreciate the time you give to answering questions

I have a Office 2000 installed. I want to keep this and use it as my main MS product especially as it links up with my work computer and some macros there . However I need to install Office Pro 2010 for occasional use of a macro within excel.

Rather than installing it on the same system would it be easier (and less likely to produce conflicts) if I install it on the same pc but under a different user? (I'm running on XP Pro r.3)

Many thanks

Jack

Jack,

installing under a different user will not change the common files that are shared, so is unlikely to resolve the issue.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply David

I have bought a copy of Office Pro 2010 and installed it in the same User as Office 2000. By default I would like files with the suffix .xls to open with Office 2000 but Office 2010 has changed them to open with Office 2010.

I have gone into <explorer><tools><folder options><file types> Selected .xls <advanced> selected Open <edit> and then browsed to C:\P~File\|M~O~\Office\excel.exe being the exe file for Office 2000.

It works but when I try to open a file called jack straw.xls (note space) in the folder C:\My Documents Excel 2000 opens and then tells me it cannot find the file C:\My.xls <ok> then it cannot find the file Documents.xls <ok> then it cannot find the file jack.xls

<> then straw.xls and then finally it opens the file

I'm running XP Pro sp3

Its not mission critical but it is a tad annoying. Is there something I can do to correct this?

Thanks

Jack

Hi David,

I'm attempting to have 2003 and 2010 coexist and having a difficult time of it on my w2k3 TS.

I have installed the following:

Office 03:

Outlook

Word

Excel

Access

PowerPoint

Office 2010:

Word

Excel

Access

PowerPoint

Publisher

Any suggestions?  Launching Outlook as a reg user I keep getting MS WORD 14.0 "An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly.  Please run Setup and Select "Repair..." To restore this application."

David Overton wrote re: Installing Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same system

Lori,

Outlook 2003 has an option to not use Word as the editor and I suspect this will be required here.

email.about.com/.../How_to_Use_Word_as_Your_Default_Email_Editor_in_Outlook.htm has the simple instructions on how to turn this off which should remove the error.

Thanks

David

Hi David.

This is my setup.  I'm also in the teaching environment.  I have 4 computer labs.  I have 48 stand alone computers, in my lab, running XP Pro and Office 2003.  At the beginning of 2011 we started using Office 2007 with the grade 10 learners using a different lab. Now that I have them for grade 11 next year I have to install Office 2007 onto my machines but should also have 2003 for the grade 12's

I did the NoReReg registry entry and it works fine since we are not using Outlook.  We are not on a domain… just a normal ethernet network.

On each computer I have six profiles.  The Administrator, an exam profile which is linked to the server, 2 x gr.11 profiles and 2 x gr.12 profiles.  I have two groups of each.

My issue is that I would like the different profiles to automatically use the different office versions.  For instance: When a grade 11 learner opens a document, the profile must know to use Office 2007 applications.  When a grade 12 learner opens a document, the profile must know to use Office 2003.

I tried to use the ‘Open with’ option, but it cascades through to the other profiles and then the grade 11 profile opens documents using Office 2003.

Is there a way to get pass this problem?  Does this even make sense?

Thanks

Martin

Do you have a set of Office 2007 disks (or Office 2010) - you will need to have purchased these to install the newer version of Office.

If I put in its own patrician, can I place a short cut on the desk top and access it without causes any access problems for 2003?
