Microsoft Office Outlook Connector Beta (how to connect Office Live Basics or Windows Live Hotmail to Outlook)

Don't you love the way the title of a product described what it is?  While this product does what it says on the tin, it misses out the most important thing - what can you connect Outlook to.  The answer is e-mail and contacts based on our Hotmail service, so this includes OfficeLive.  If you sign up to one of the subscription OfficeLive services (i.e. you pay us to use it) then you get a connector which can do all this AND synchronise your calendar items too.  Once in Outlook you can do all the searching, filing and manipulation you want to do.

Today you can now download the beta of the next version of the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector.

Download: Microsoft Office Outlook Connector (Beta)

The Microsoft Office Outlook Connector is designed to let you access your Windows Live Hotmail account through Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007. You will be able to download and install the Connector to sync up your email and contacts in Windows Live Hotmail for free. However, if you are a paid subscriber of MSN Premium, Office Live Essentials, or Office Live Premium you will get the added functionality of being able to sync up your calendar, tasks and notes from Outlook to Windows Live Hotmail.

I know many of you probably took note to the statement made on the download page of being able to "synchronize your Windows Live Calendar in Outlook". Windows Live Hotmail currently has a built in calendar service which is essentially your Windows Live Calendar. Your calendar from Outlook is published and viewable through this service in Windows Live Hotmail.

Microsoft missed the forest for the trees here.  You have to pay for one of the email services to be able to use Outlook and the Connector.  Nice.  One less reason to buy Office, one more Thunderbird user.

David,

you are 100% wrong - from the download page (it has just gone from beta to released) only calendar and tasks require a paid for account:

Outlook Connector enables you to use your Live Hotmail accounts within Outlook:

Read and send your Office Live Mail/Windows Live Hotmail e-mail messages.

Manage your Live Mail Contacts.

Use advanced options for blocking junk e-mail messages.

Manage multiple e-mail accounts in one place.

With a paid subscription, Outlook Connector enables these additional features:

Manage, share, and synchronize your Windows Live Calendar in Outlook.

Access your Tasks and Notes.

David, Its all good with outlook connector being able to sync email and with a paid sub, calendar and taks etc etc etc.

I have Exchange 2003 and Office Live Premium. All i am trying to achieve is to sync my public calendar from Exchange to Office Live Calendar. I am also trying to sync the public calendar to a a smart phone. I am assuming that Microsoft will only push to a Windows Mobile, and not a Blackberry. I would pick either as long as I can sync. Any suggestions?

Hi David

I recently installed Outook Connector (OC) and was using it with Outlook 2003. There was an update to OC and since then I have not been able to connect to the Windows Live server to access hotmail through Outlook. When I re-installed OC and click on the hotmail folder in Outlook a message appears saying this is a subscription service?

I want to have all my e-mail accounts in Outlook. I downloaded Outlook Connector and it runs well with hotmail accounts. I couldn’t connect a gmail and mail.com accounts.

Does anybody know how I could connect from outlook 2007 to gmail and mail.com?

Hi, I have a question if anyone can help. I downloaded the Outlook connector just the other day so it's the updated version. And I have Outlook 2003. So I should be able to connect to my live account. But for some reason I can't. My email might have something to do with it - I subscribed to the account through Windows Live but my address is [email protected] NOT [email protected]. Is this the problem??

Thanks

Dawn,

it should work.  I would contact the Office Live support team.

Thanks
