Couple of questions:

* Is this just the new version of NTBackup?

* What sort of backup is taken? - Is it just one huge .bak file or does the server get imaged as a backup?

* How come MS have stopped support of Tape backup drives? - Does this mean that a client who has an LTO2 drive cannot use it with SBS 2008

* When do us Action Pack/ Technet customers get our dirty mits on the RTM version?

* Are we ever going to see you back up here in Edinburgh at one of the user group meetings?!

You mention using USB drives, and while I am starting to use these devices more than tapes, they have (had) a problem with files over 20Gb in size.

Despite many updates / fixes / reg edits all the servers I have external hard drives attached to simply freeze once a file hits 20Gb.

Such a file could be (and usually is) NTBackups of exchange.

I hope this is going to be resolved in future versions

Ditto that.. When will we get the full version in the Action Pack?

Sure would be dandy if I could figure out how to send the jobs to a NAS drive instead.

Hey tezfair, make sure your drives are formatted NTFS rather than FAT32.

And RDX type drives still have a problem in not being found.  You can go to the backup console and do a one time but it will not configure through normal setup.  You also can't get it to allow a backup schedule because the setup can not find a "valid" USB drive.....  Was a problem with SBS 2003 with removable drives and it does not look like they fixed it in the newest version of backup.  Shame that something with removable 500 GB/ 1 TB compressed is not supported.....

Just spoke to MSFT support re: backing up to an RDX type drive and was told a hotfix should be available in 4-6 weeks!

we have just installed sbs 2008.  i bought an external hard drive to do the backup.  the wizard only finds the c:  we have a public n: that has all of our data in.  how can i get the backup to include that info as well?  at the same time-daily with the system backup?

The purpose of a backup is to hold dear information safe.  If SBS2008 can only perform backups to connected USB or firewire external HD then inherently it is completely worthless as the drives will have to be located within a cable length of the server.   A fire/flood will take out the server and your backup drive together.  Why did they take out the functionality of backing up  to a network accesible drive  that could be located in another room or even building ?

I am also wondering when/how we can get Windows Server 2008 R2 to recognize our RDX drive as a backup device with Windows Server Backup.  Anyone have a solution for this yet?

I'm int the same situation with a Dell Rd1000 internal drive (removable disk-based cartridges).

When we purchased a Dell T300 server the RD1000 was specced along with a number of the cartridges as well as SBS 2008.

Unfortunately all of that is wasted since SBS2008 won't recognize the drive as a valid backup destination.

So, it looks like we are forced to purchase 3rd party software that is SBS compatible (Exchange-aware ?) and supports the RD1000.....all because SBS won't recognize a piece of hardware sold for the sole purpose of backups......a bit crazy to me.

I have a client with a Dell PowerEdge 1900 (8 GB RAM / 2 TB - RAID 5).  They have an RD1000 drive.  When the server was running SBS 2k3, you could hack the registry and make it see an RD 1000 removable drive, but you would have to configure the back up and point it to a USB drive first.   If you ever reconfigured the backup, you had to rehack the registry.

We just upgraded to SBS 2008.  It was a failed migration and I did a clean install of SBS 2008.  It won't see the RD 1000 drives either.  I went and purchased a brand new 1 TB USB drive and the SBS 2008 Backup Wizard goes through the motion of "formatting the drive" and configuring the backup, then fails.  I have tried three different drives.

I am not particularly fond of SBS 2008, if it were not for 64 bit support, I would be going backwards running and screaming.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this but...  My brother and I got the RD1000 and for some reason we cannot even get the device to be accepted by the system.  When trying to access it in My Computer or trying the manual eject button.  Computer will freeze or not eject unless power is reset to the device.  I know there are problems using the built-in  backup in SBS2008 but is sbs2008 typically having this problem also with the device itself?  Since we have 3rd party software, Symantec Backup Exec.  Iv heard that part of the process shouldn't be too large of a problem.  Do i just have a defective device?

I have found that certain models of USB external drives do not work with SBS2008 and or my DL360G5.

The case is nice and cushiony! I think this drive will have decent shock resistance.

My problem was trying to use it with SBS2008 on a DL360G5 server. Initial plug in and detect was ok, but when trying to run the SBS backup, the entire server bogged down to thousands of times slower than normal. Exiting the backup did not help, not did removing power from the drive. The server returned to normal after disconnecting the USB plug (drive power was already off). I returned these

I am now using Toshiba Canvio Plus 1.0 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive E05A100PBU2XK which mostly work (server will not reboot with drive plugged in).(could not find C:). Unplugging lets it boot normally.

Does anyone know what the script might be for setting nightly scheduled backups at 10pm to a mapped drive please.

We have an external USB connected to a PC in a building next door but its on the same network that the SBS 2008 server has access to. We can easily run once backups to this drive \\192.168.10.10\backups\daily\ but the wizard will not allow us to set scheduled backups to this external usb thats mapped. I appreciate I can use it if I pop it into the sbs 2008 server but thats in the same room etc. I need it in the building next door but one, just incase of fire/flood etc. So if anyone has the required script that can run nightly backups at 10pm to \\192.168.10.10\backups\daily\ that would be great, even better if they could be set to overwrite the existing backups on the mapped drive by a certain amount of days

The last comment on this thread is a few months old so I hope it's OK to post here.  Your response from 2/15/2010 mentions "The advice is to have mulitple backup devices and regularly swap them," something I've been trying to configure in SBS2008 for weeks now.

I have several external USB hard drives that I'd like to rotate on a daily basis but, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to configure Server Backup to do it.  I've tried attaching each drive individually, first giving them all the same label, next giving them different labels.  In each scenario, backup fails unless the last configured drive is the one that's attached.

Can you offer some guidance on how to configure Server Backup to allow me to rotate in/out individual drives?  Again, the point is to keep all of the drives offsite except for the one that is needed onsite for that day's backup.

Seeing that this tread is active again, i wonder something with these multi external drives. most of the time our customers are using 2 external drives. using wbadmin to setup works perfect. the problem is.  We use 1external drive for midnights and 1 over day. the day one gets removed afther work hours and connect again in the morning, however the problem seems to b with active and online. as it keeps write to the one used last (midnight one) but the dialy does show active in the console. so i wonder if its possible to solve this? like do you have to disconnect the midnight to run the daily or there is nothing like a priorities witch to write a selected drive as first?
